From dany at why2025.org Sat Jan 25 10:31:32 2025 From: dany at why2025.org (Dany) Date: Sat, 25 Jan 2025 10:31:32 +0100 Subject: [MCH Team:Info] Blog post from Team:Content Message-ID: <0d28a5c6-e74d-42cd-805a-51828c920bd8@why2025.org> Hi Team: Info, Team:Content has written a blog post for the WHY Blog as a call to action for the CFP. Could you embed Bert's youtube video in the post? And if not, make the link look nice? On behalf of Team:Content, Dany *Should I submit a talk to speak at WHY2025?* ?Should I submit a talk to speak at WHY2025?? Short answer: "Yes." Slightly longer answer: "Absolutely yes!" "But no-one would be interested in my very niche field of expertise." You're most probably wrong with that assumption; this conference/festival will host several thousand nerds in all sorts of shapes, forms, and sizes. At least some of them are bound to have interest in your Bluetooth beehive production monitoring solution, as long as it doesn't contain a blockchain. Also all talks will be recorded, so your potential audience will be the whole of the internet from now till the end of time. In the past we have had talks ranging from building an Homebrew Hadron Collider, to folding clothes efficiently, from classical piano recitals to buying complete prison facilities, from accidentally(!!) buying water towers to actual NSA whistleblowers live on stage. So our interests are rather broad, to put it mildly. "But my research isn't done yet." That's not necessarily a bad thing; being on one of our stages might get you in touch with like minded nerds who have been dabbling in a similar field. They might be able to kickstart your plans. Even "I did a thing and it failed spectacularly" can be a very informative talk, preventing others from the same pitfalls. "But I'm not good enough to be on stage." Most of our speakers once had that same opinion, and some of them still do. To battle your imposter syndrome we can offer you a very friendly and supportive audience, several sizes of stages to choose from and even the coaching skills of Bert Hubert. Bert is a talkdoctor extraordinaire, who has generously offered to take some speakers under his wing to get the best out of their stage-time. To get a taste of Bert?s coaching, here is a video with tips on giving good presentations. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wurkgAqKm34 ?But I don?t know how to submit a proposal.? Head over to https://cfp.why2025.org and share your ideas. Catchy titles are catchy, but don't go too wild; being able to guess the subject of the talk by looking at the title has its merits. For now your proposal doesn?t need to be perfect, as long as the reviewers can get a clear idea of what you want to talk about. The abstract in its final form will be printed in the official schedule, therefore it should clearly explain to your potential crowd why they would want to see you perform. But you can edit that after submitting. Here?s a quick tip: a good abstract will entice someone in the first two or three sentences to come to your talk. ?What if I have any questions?? Contact Team:Content (content at why2025.org ). The team members can help you with your submission for 'Building a computer for advanced mathematics out of an antique jacquard loom', or any other topic you want to bring to the event. If you're still unsure if your talk fits the audience, the answer is yes!, but still want some personal reassurance you can also contact us. ?One last thing: how long do I have?? The WHY2025 CFP closes on Towel Day, also known as May 25th. But we can assure you: submitting earlier will absolutely lower the amount of deadline panic (both for you and for us). So hitch a ride to https://cfp.why2025.org and submit your ideas! -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
