[why2025-orga] Scam Alert: Fake emails claiming scraped attendee list

Hi all,

Large conferences often grab unwanted attention. And WHY2025 is no
different. Today, many of our sponsors, sister conferences and
individuals were contacted by gmail addresses with a message they had a
copy of our attendee list including all forms of private data.

While we are still investigating whether any compromise to private
system have occurred (we haven't found any indication for this yet), we
want to stress that this tactic is getting more common: scammers
increasingly target communities around major tech events to exploit
trust and extract money or information. This kind of social engineering
is happening more and more across the conference world.

We have several reasons to believe this is **not** coming from the
WHY2025 ticket system. Among the reasons are the numbers mentioned and
the haggling tone of the email.

We **strongly advise** against replying or engaging with the senders of
these emails. Past experiences show that this only encourages further
contact and never results in useful information.

Stay vigilant. If you receive a suspicious message, feel free to forward
it to info at why2025.org

Warm regards,

Robert / Number3
