Hi Walter,
I think a 'call for papers' is more accurate, it forces a person to
write
a coherent story or a message they want to send out - even if it does
not
involve actual paper these days. It is also a statement that one can
expect
to get published (eventually), and can be defended by the person, by
questions at the end of the presentation. The questions part is a very
important part of the event - real participation can follow.
A mere call for 'participation' could also be interpreteed very passive.
