Dear K4T0, dear Team:Foodcourt,

It was lovely to meet you on Saturday and I hope you are doing well!

Following our discussion, Team:Terrain has had a lengthy discussion
about the proposed food court layout and your question about moving the
bar further to the south.
We have some worries about the user interactions that your layout
invites and how it integrates with our concept.
In particular, we are worried about two things:

For our camp the visitors are walking through the field randomly looking
at whatever they come across, villages, workshops, art, etc. and this is
desirable behavior.
After all, everyone brings cool stuff, and we want visitors to engage
with each other.
We would like the food court to fit into this usage of the terrain, so
we want to make it natural and almost obvious to walk through the food
court randomly.
Visitors naturally discover what foods exist and that the food court is
a nice place to be.
With the current layout visitors coming to the court have to pass
between the food trucks approaching from behind which will always feel
'like your doing it wrong'.

Generally, when placing things on the terrain we try to spread things
out and make use of natural terrain features as much as possible.
This way the place feels more coherent and less 'different pieces stuck
together with sticky tape'.
To us, the current design feels like a block within the terrain that
does not connect with the surrounding parts.
While we appreciate the fact that the supplier has an interest in
creating a cohesive environment for their food trucks, we think that
with the current location this layout would negatively impact the flow
of the place.

We also have a technical issue with the design you showed us: It takes
up about half of the space where the info tent was supposed to be.
We can move it slightly but not far enough to make the exact thing you
proposed work.
This is a technical issue though and for our proposals info will also be
moved slightly.

We have two proposals for what we think would be a layout that fits
better with the feel of the camp.
Our goal with this is to make use of natural barriers in the terrain and
make the food court an obvious thing to walk through.
Both of our proposals also use more space than was originally designated
for the food court to make it feel more open.

The first proposal (orange) looks like this:

This makes use of the back info and the hill as pre-existing barriers
for the back sides of the trucks while still keeping them as close
together as before.
The funnel shape also makes it natural to walk into from all sides.
The star tent can also move further north or a bit south, if that is
more convenient.
If we go for this option then it might still make sense to move the bar
south a little, that would be up to you.

Our second option (pink) pulls the trucks apart a bit more:

This layout uses the hill at the rice fields as a barrier instead of info.
That way we still allow info to be open from any side and integrate the
bar more into the food court.
The position of the star tent here is even more fluid and can move
sensibly on the grass it is currently on.

A hybrid of orange and pink not putting anything next to the hill is
also definitely possible. We just haven't drawn that yet as we don't
know all the design considerations that you are working with.

Please let us know what you think!

Kind Regards,
Team:Terrain
